MATTERS IN OUR SURROUNDINGS

INTRODUCTION

• Anything having mass and volume is called matter.
• You already have some idea about mass but,
• What is volume??
• The amount OF space covered by an object is called volume of that object.
• Example of matters are:-
• Pen , because it have mass and volume both.
• Book, it also have mass and volume.
• Air, it also have mass and volume.  Etc

 

 

Classification of matter

 

In ancient time:-

• Ancient Indian philosophers believes that the hole universe is made by the five things :- air, water , fire, earth and sky. These five things as a combined called Panch Tatva.
• Ancient Greek philosophers have also same type of believe.

 

        In modern days:-

• We classify matters on the basis of its physical or chemical property.

 

• In this chapter we will only study the classification of matter on the basis of physical properties.
