- Everything inside the cell membrane is known as protoplasm.
- Inside the protoplasm cytoplasm and nucleoplasm are present.
- Cytoplasm is the jelly like structure found inside the cell in which all cell organelles are present.
- In cytoplasm cytosol and cell organelles are present.
- Cytoplasm is divided into two parts:-
- Endoplasm
- Ectoplasm or Cell cortex
Endoplasm
- Endoplasm is the inner part of cytoplasm .
- It is granulated and dense.
- Most of the metabolic process occurs inside the endoplasm.
Ectoplasm
- Ectoplasm is the outer layer of cytoplasm.
- It is watery and clear.
- It is not granulated.
- It is located just after the plasma membrane.
- It support cell membrane for elasticity.
Cytosol
- It is the soluble part of the cytoplasm.
- It is located between cell organelles.
- Cytosol contains complex, dynamic network of interlinking protein called cytoskeleton which provide shape of the cell.
- In cytosol there is 90% water and form solution.
- Cytosol forms two type of solution:
- True solution
- Colloidal solution
True solution
Water of cytoplasm form solution with ions and small molecules is called true solution.
Colloidal solution
Water of cytoplasm form solution with large molecules is called Colloidal solution.
- There are two types of colloidal solution one is sol (non-viscous) another one is gel (viscous).
- Cytoplasm provide medium for the organelles to remain suspended.
- Stores molecules that is useful for cellular process.
- Cytoplasm is always in state of movement.
