Accuracy, Precision of instrument and errors in measurements

Expand EDUCATION

  • When you measure something there is some uncertainty.
  • And these uncertainty is known as errors in measurement.
Accuracy
  • Accuracy is the how much close to the real value.
  • Accuracy of measurements depends upon many factors like as resolution of measuring instrument.
Precision

  • What resolution the quantity is measured.
The errors in measurement is classified in two types:-

  1. Systematic error
  2. Random  error
Systematic error

  • Errors in one direction is known as systematic errors.
  • Some of the sources of systematic error are:-
           a. Instrumental error:-  Error in measurement due to instruments.
           b. Imperfection in experimental techniques :- If you don't have technique to measure something                 then you will get some error in measurements.
          c. Personal error:- The error in measurements due to lack of knowledge how to use apparatus in                  proper manner.

Random error
  • Error due to randomness in experimental condition.
Least count errors
  • The smallest value that can be measured by the measuring instrument is called its least count.
  • Least count error is the error associated with resolution of the instrument.
