COMBINATION OF RESISTORS

  • Resistors can be combined into two ways:-
1.Series combination:- If two or more resistors are connected in such a way in which the endpoint of the first resistor is connected with the starting point of the second resistor and the endpoint of the second resistor is connected with the starting point of the third resistor and the endpoint of the third resistor is connected with the starting point of the fourth resistor and so on then, the combination is known as series combination.

  • In series combination electric current is same but the voltage will divide.
R equivalent in series combination
  • In series combination voltage divides,
  • V=V1+V2+V3
  • IRnet= IR1+IR2+IR3    (V=IR from ohm's law)
  • IRnet=I(R1+R2+R3)     (on dividing by I both side)
  • Rnet=R1+R2+R3 
2.Parallel combination: If two or more resistors are connected in such a way in which the starting point of all conductors is joining at a point and the ending point of all resistors is joining at another point, then the combination is known as parallel combination. 
  • In parallel combination, the voltage is the same but the current will divide.

R equivalent in parallel combination:-

  • In parallel combination current divides:-
  • Inet = I1+I2+I3
  • V/Rnet=V/R1+V/R2+V/R3.........     ( V=IR; I=V/R )
  • V/Rnet=V(1/R1+1/R2+1/R3)  .......... (dividing by V on both side)   
  • 1/Rnet= 1/R1+1/R2+1/R3

Electrons move more easily through some materials than others when a voltage is applied. In metals, the electrons are held so loosely that they move almost without any hindrance. We measure how much opposition there is to an electric current as resistance. Resistors come somewhere between conductors, which conduct easily, and insulators, which don't conduct at all. Resistance is measured in ohms after the discoverer of a law relating voltage to current. How the combination and the way resistors are connected impact the flow of current you explained very well here.
