CROP VARIETY IMPROVEMENT

  • Farmers desire high yields and good quality of grains from the farming.
  • High yields and good quality of grains can be obtained if the plants and the process of farming is good.
  • The qualities of good plants are:-
    • Higher yield:- The plant having more produce more grains.
    • Improved quality:- The grains of plants have good quality.
      • example:- Baking quality of wheat, protein quality of pulses, oil quality of oil seed, preserving quality of fruits and vegetables.
    • Abiotic resistance :-The plant have ability to sustain in any condition such as drought, water logging, heat cold .
    • Biotic resistance :- The plant have ability to fight from diseases , protect itself from insects and nematods.
    • Short maturity duration:- Plants having short maturity periods helps in double and multiple cropping. That means a single land is used 2-3 times in a year for different crops.
    • Wider adaptability:- If the crops have wider adaptability then it can grow in any environmental condition and in any area.
    • Desire agronomic traits:- Some plants have high yield if it is tall and some plants have high yields if it is dwarf.
      • example:-fodder crops are good when it is tall and cereals are good if it is dwarf.
